Komodo National Park was established in 1980 by the Indonesian government as a reserve to protect the Komodo Dragon, the world’s largest endangered lizard. Since then, the site has also become a sanctuary for other exotic animals such as snakes, birds, buffaloes and sea crocodiles.

2. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991

In 1991, Komodo National Park was declared  a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Human and Biosphere Reserve. UNESCO recognizes the park as a sanctuary for the unique Komodo dragon. Additionally, WWF and Conservation International have designated the area as a global conservation priority. Finally, the park has established its global significance as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

3. It Consists of 3 Large Islands

Komodo National Park consists of three large islands namely Padar Island, Rinca Island, Komodo Island and 26 smaller islands surrounding them. Each island offers visitors its spectacular beauty. Padar Island is famous for its hiking spots and is also known for its spectacular sunrise and sunset views from the top.

5. The Best Time to Visit is During the Dry Season

The dry season is the best time to visit Komodo National Park, which lasts from April to December. The weather is perfect, not too hot and the chances of rain are rare. The mating season is from July to August, but Komodo dragons are very difficult to spot during the breeding season of September to November.

6. Komodo Dragons are Cannibals

The Komodo dragon is a carnivore, feeding on animals such as pigs, deer and buffaloes. Also other Komodo also eats dragons, especially newborn dragons. Fortunately, young Komodo dragons are very agile and can escape from hungry adult predators by climbing trees. Juvenile Komodo dragons feed on treetop birds, small snakes, and other small animals.

However, contrary to its name, this species is not a true dragon. In fact, they are the largest lizards on earth. They can weigh up to 135 kg and grow up to 3 meters in length. Komodo dragons also have a very strong sense of smell. Like other lizards, it smells with the tip of its tongue.
